Of the six original breeds of dogs from Japan, the Shiba Inu is the smallest. The exact meaning of this breeds name is unknown, but there are a few speculations. Shiba Inu is mostly translated as “Little Brushwood Dog.” One of the main shiba inu characteristics is there double coat. They have an incredibly large amount of hair for such a small dog. The males are generally 25-43 cm tall and weigh around 23 pounds. Females of this breed, as most others, tend to be smaller weighing in around 17 pounds and standing 33-41 cm high. According to DNA Analysis, this breed is one of the oldest breeds there is dating back to 3rd century BC.
When it comes to their personality, there are some excellent shiba inu characteristics. They are an independent and intelligent breed, but at times they are obedience issues. This breed of dog possesses a hunting drive that at times can lead to their disobedience. They usually need to be on a leash. With proper and consistent training it may be possible that they could go without one though. Being extremely clean dogs, this breed will spend a lot of time licking and cleaning themselves. They will even avoid walking in puddles or stepping in dirt or mud. Who doesn’t love a clean dog?
One of the greatest shiba inu characteristics is that they are extremely easy to housebreak. Often times they housebreak themselves. This may have something to do with their nature of cleanliness. These fluffy and fun-loving dogs are now primarily kept as a pet in Japan as well as around the world. However, they were originally used for hunting small game such as rabbits and birds. They almost became extinct during World War II as a result of bombing raids and the distemper epidemic.
Shiba Inus were not introduced to the United States until the 1950′s and not so long ago in 1992, they became recognized by the American Kennel Club. As far as health conditions go the shiba inu characteristics that primarily are of concern are dysplasia of the hip, ocular disease, and food allergies. Epilepsy has also become a concern recently. However, this breed of dog is rather healthy and they are not many reported cases of health issues overall. Their average life expectancy is 12-16 years which goes to show that they tend to rather a rather healthy breed. Shiba Inus are a beautiful and intelligent breed of dog that could bring a lot of happiness to its owner.
